home what we do missions follow stories reports contact we are we're from the west coast of canada but are currently on mission in africa. we reside in kampala uganda but work in a number of areas of november 2014. they were seriously malnourished at that time but they have fully recovered and are thriving today. at 2 years old, grace was only 4kg and required prompt intervention. she was surrendered to district authorities who placed her in care at hope center uganda where her recovery began. terry met grace while she was volunteering at hope center and fell in love. shortly after meeting grace, we agreed to foster her and her brother joshua and they were placed in our care. joshua was in better health but also in need of good nutrition. these two little characters are perhaps the most significant example of transformation we have witnessed here in africa. it is our desire to make them permanent members of our family and we are slowly moving in this direction. community healthy families and healthy communities allow children to thrive. andrew and terry work within the community to improve opportunities for families and support community programming. children in our community often live in harsh conditions. many struggle to help provide for their families and endure abuse. we look for ways to engaged with, support and educate children about the issues they face. understanding is an effective weapon against conditions. as we encounter local organizations who are actively improving living conditions for children, we partner to increase success. where we work outside our own community, we look for ways to engage and partner with leaders. building relationships and trust with local leaders takes time and effort. in south sudan for instance, we have invested years developing our connection to and understanding of a small village in order to effectively help them establish some social businesses. health access to health care in africa is challenging. we often get engaged with medical clinics and health education as a way to help children, families and communities survive. the young lady pictured here attended a medical clinic in south sudan. she had a growth on her neck that needed to be removed. unfortunately her family didn't have the means to transport her to town and have this elective surgery performed. it was fortunate that we had a surgeon with us as he was able to help with this operation and another more serious one. this young girls growth was not life threatening, but removing it was certainly life changing. based on the typical wage of the people we work with in uganda or the practical issues involved in accessing medical care in south sudan, so many suffer with conditions that are relatively simple to resolve. a health clinic provides much needed access to both doctors and medicine. each clinic generates a number of compelling stories about changed lives. clinics are not the only necessary aspect of health care in africa. we often encounter health situations that can be almost fully resolved through education. in the south for instance we have educated villagers about how to reduce or even eliminate jiggers. jiggers are a parasitic flea that burrows into feet causing the surrounding flesh to die and rot. education on how to eliminate jiggers can be taught. education we see education and opportunity as key factors in addressing poverty. as our work matures in africa, we are investing more energy in activities that provide these key ingredients for success. today, we are actively training technical skills to young adults in our community. these skills are supported with business opportunity so the team can gain experience and make a living. we are also working toward teaching entrepreneurial skills using a curriculum developed by a local organization with roots in new york. it is our hope to help young people in our community to be their own solution as they learn to identify markets, manage money effectively, and establish a clientele. relief relief is required from time-to-time when circumstances leave families in despirate conditions. when refugees need food and water for instance we must all rally to help them. while we don't seek out situations that require relief, we are in a position to help people in serious need from time to time. in these cases, we look for ways to engage that will move the situation toward sustainability. we are not the unrc and we do not have the resources of an organization such as unicef, but there can be situations that fall through the political cracks that we are ideally suited to work with. in these cases we try to work with partners on the ground to establish requirements and analyze how we can react. one example of this is a group of returnees from the sango bay camp in rakai. this group has now been relocated to kazinga in the mubende district. these people were trapped with few resources. government and non-government organizations didn't agree on the way to help. in this case, we were able to help with medical clinics, provide tools so they could establish latrines, and even assist in bringing clean water to the community. all these relief activities added up to help these families survive. business business opposes poverty. it empowers people, builds self-esteem and reduces illegal activity. a key goal for our work in kampala is to establish locals in successful businesses. social business is our goal. we wish to establish a number of businesses in our community which strive to create opportunity as they become successful. for the correct individuals, we offer business skills, encouragement and leadership. almost anyone we meet would take a handout and start a business, so we move slowly and establish relationships. we seek out young adults who are passionate and share our vision to be community changers. we also look for individuals who are working toward their goals with what they have today. trinity (emma) is a great example of a young man with community vision, talent, and the drive to succeed. we have helped trinity establish a media company called era92 which is now training and employing a number of community youth on a part-time basis. missions our story count the costs engage! the decision terry and i began work in africa in 2009 through a church mission trip. with an expanded world view, we started visiting uganda and south sudan annually on our vacations. in 2013 we began to feel a serious call to missions and by 2014 we were actively planning to relocate. it took us 1 full year to prepare ourselves and our family for this change, but in june of 2014 we finally moved to uganda. today we work with children and families in several communities. the transition terry and i chose uganda because we had established relationships here through earlier missions trips. in addition, uganda made a good central location for work in other african countries and the english language was wide spread. since our arrival we have seen a focusing of our mission. what started out as simple support of partners has now crystalized into specific objectives. we want to see families and communities become healthy places where children
